Nihan put together a project with the unreal Turkish fretless guitar player, Cenk Erdogan, and myself: we played extended sets opening for the Salzburg Opera Festival, and at the bomb venue, Jazzit; we also created a beatbox/vocal improvisation workshop for the public, with the heavy-hitting Austrian beatbox crew, Massive Beats Collective, and gave a brief interview/performance on local radio. Thank you so much to Nihan, and to Eva, for organizing this project. We are trying to continue it in the fall, with the newly-presented opportunity to record in Salzburg and perform some more dates....thank you Nihan and Cenk!

I'm currently en route to Portland, where I will play some more dates with the Wiyos at the Pickathon Festival, then I'll be back in NYC for a hit at South Street Seaport with Yo Yo Nation, orchestrated by Pat Cuartero, whom I met when we were invited to play a gig by Heavy.com in '07...then I'm excited to announce I'll be part of a brief tour of SE Asia, with beatboxers Kid Lucky, Reeps1, and Dharni, sponsored by Adidas...then, a week performing shows at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Green Show--two solo performances and one collab with Portland Cello Ensemble, as well as some workshopping of vocal percussion and Shakespeare...ongoing is an evening-length modern dance composition with beatbox score, in collaboration with choreographer, Tami Stronach, to be presented in March 2010: we will be presenting excerpts of the piece-in-progress Oct. 22-24 at Joe's Pub....

BAMCafe, Joe's Pub

Hey everyone, getting very excited for this Saturday's show at BAMCafe:

Muslim Voices at BAMcafé

Saturday, Jun 13th 9:30pm

Free admission

Composer/producer Adam Matta is a beatboxing tour de force, melding hip-hop, electronic, jazz, and traditional Middle Eastern music for a unique and driving sound. I appear on the track, "Caller ID," and I love what they did with it.....

Currently in London, where I performed at the International Human Beatbox Convention at the Southbank Centre. It was an excellent time, got to hang with some excellent beatboxers from all over the world. See Humanbeatbox.com for info, photos and reviews. Also played a great gig with Tubist, Oren Marshall, at a dope event called Gyspy Madness, orchestrated by the inimitable Amanda Rodgers, and played this last weekend at "White Mischief," an old-school 30's/40's themed party with everyone dressed to tha 9's.....

In the week in between, I flew to Salzburg, Austria, to work on a collaboration with vocalist, Nihan Devecioglu. She will be one of my guest artists at a performance at BAMCafe, June 13th, part of the Muslim Voices Festival. She has an amazing voice, classically trained, and influenced by Turkish folk music from her roots in Istanbul, and we spent three days rehearsing at a beautiful arts facility at the base of this snow-capped mountain in southern Salzburg. We also got to perform two gigs in Vienna, where the magnanimous/magnificent Sxip Shirey was playing, along with Benji Fox-Rosen. We hit up a swanky club, Lokativ, and an anarchist collective dance party in the ritzy section of Vienna...

Europe's been truly amazing, looking forward to coming back in a month's time, to hit up the World Championships Beatbox Battle in Berlin, where I'll be showcasing a set....

Before I came to Europe, I performed at Joe's Pub in NYC, with guest artists Noah Hoffeld, Yayoi Filipski, Zef Noise, and Ned Rothenberg. So glad I got to rock there, hope to be back there soon, THANKS to all who came out...

Finally, the Youtube Symphony Mahsup Video premiered this week, and my video of me beatboxing the "brake drum" and "snare" part was included, check it out:

March updates

Hi everyone!

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, it's been a hectic few months...played the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville with Sxip Shirey--was an amazing time...got down to Jacksonville, FLA, to work with Al Letson on a poem/video shoot...had a great solo show at Banjo Jim's...much more to come...

Here are some upcoming gigs:

Thurs, Mar. 5 (7:30pm), Fri., Mar. 6 (8pm), Sat., Mar. 7 (9:30pm)
backing up Tami Stronach in the modern dance remix of "Cabaret," at Dancemopolitan
Joe's Pub
425 Lafayette (Astor Place, Public Theater)
http://www.dancenownyc.org/dancemopolitan.htm

Saturday, Mar. 7, 7pm
The Wiyos and Friends
Joe's Pub
425 Lafayette (Astor Place, Public Theater)
www.myspace.com/thewiyos

Sunday, Mar. 8, 9:30 pm
backing up chanteuse Stephanie Nilles
Rockwood Music Hall
Allen and Stanton
www.myspace.com/stephanienilles

Tuesday, Mar. 10, doors at 6:30pm
with Sxip Shirey, opening for Gary Lucas' Fast N' Bulbous Captain Beefheart Project
Le Poisson Rouge
158 Bleecker
$15
video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbpOoTEFD_g

Friday, Mar. 13th, 12 midnight
backing up Akim Funk Buddha
The Blue Note
131 W. 3rd St.
www.funkbuddha.org

Thurs, Mar. 26th, 9pm
Hank Roberts and Wingnut, plus Adam Matta
Castaways
Ithaca, NY
www.hankrobertsmusic.com
www.myspace.com/wingnutjazz

Saturday, April 4th, 11:30pm
Adam Matta and Friends, with special guests Noah Hoffeld (cello) and Yayoi Filipski (voice)
Joe's Pub
425 Lafayette @ Astor Place, Public Theater
$12
http://www.joespub.com/component/option,com_shows/task,view/Itemid,40/id,4456

Saturday, May 2nd
Adam Matta's "Gyroscope," part of the VITAL VOX Festival
Iati Theater
E. 4th St., more info TBA

Illuminating Islam: Adam Matta and Friends at BAMCafe, an evening of music and poetry, drawing from Arabic, Sufi, hip hop, Turkish, classical and avante-garde jazz influences. Thanks to Claudia Alick and Bill Rausch for everything, and much love to everyone who participated and in the community.

Now, a show in LA, tonight, at Echo Curio, and one in SF, where I'll be headlining a Bay Area beatbox event. In this collaboration, I will be able to improvise with, and "teach" a beat to, an outfit of musical robots, to be performed October 9th, in Brooklyn, and also Oct. 17-18 in Trondheim, Norway (www.lemurbots.org).

-Been recording for different groups in and around the tri-state.

-Had an amazing time at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, performing with Sxip Shirey and numerous other talented characters...

-Had a great (but short) run of In Transit at the York Theater--many thanks to them, and to the writers and cast.... for info and photos of this great project, check out BroadwayWorld.

-Did some great shows with Michael Leonhart, Maria Millar and Kilterclash , and Beatboxer Entertainment

-Been jamming with Jonny Wilson and Eclectic Method, they make these mind-boggling REAL-TIME video mashups, realized live on stage, as well as in the studio...e.g....

check out www.youtube.com/eclecticmethod for more of their work...

Summer '08

It's been an amazing summer so far, and not done yet!!! I'm currently at Newark, waiting for my flight (delayed 5 hours) to Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival, where I'll play every night with Sxip Shirey, at the vaudeville cabaret, "And The Devil May Drag You Under..." Come through if you're in the area!!
The bulk of my summer has been an amazing project called In Transit, written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Sarah Wordsworth, James-Allen Ford, Russ Kaplan, Greg Christopher and Karla Momberg. It's an incredible piece--an a cappella musical-- which takes place in NYC's subway system, showing a series of characters going through their hectic days and situations, and I play a subway beatboxer who supplies the groove for the whole show, and mixes it up with all the different straphangers...We workshopped the piece at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Festival in CT, then, just finished a series of shows at the York Theater in Manhattan. They were all staged readings, but all along the way we were met with rave responses. The cast and director and musical director were INCREDIBLY talented, and amazing people to hang out with. We're all currently waiting to find out what the next incarnation will be...for pix from our opening night at the York, check outBroadwayworld.com. WHEN this show comes around again (fingers crossed), please come check it out....
Other highlights included a solo show at Joe's Pub, 7/14, with special guests Sxip Shirey, Bora Yoon and Eyal Maoz. Still going through the video from this show, it was a great house, and the sound there is so dope--it's definitely one of my favorite places to play in NYC...
Also, had a great time rocking with Kid Lucky and Beatboxer Entertainment, at Sidewalk Cafe, Aug. 3rd...We knocked out an hour-and-a-half fully improv, fully raw performance, conducted by Lucky, and we were all ready to keep going!! It was a really great time.
In June, played a show with jazz vocalist/trombonist, Elizabeth Dotson-Westphalen at an amazing music camp in Castleton, VT. got to conduct a workshop for the students, who taught me as much as I taught them!! Check out one of the outcomes of our musical trekking: Went on to perform at the Jamaica Greenfest, a festival of music, food, healing, and environmental awareness, raising money for Engineers Without Borders, creating well projects in Kenyan communities. Conducted workshops at Pascack Valley High School, and Brooklyn Friends School, and as always, was blown away by the talent and imagination of the kids I was working with. Finally, got to rock some great shows with Michael Leonhart and Paul Brill, at Rockwood and Joe's Pub, respectively.
Will be playing with Michael again Sept. 15th. Also, in September, I will be doing a residency with LEMUR--League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots. These fine folk build sculptures and armatures that play music, triggered by audience members and/or composers and modulated through software. I will be syncing and linking up my beats with the robots and creating a performance to be shown in October...
Peace and health,
adam

Carnegie Hall, Axis of Equals, gigs

Hey it's been a minute.

Carnegie was off the chain, what an amazing experience. The musicians involved create powerful, moving music that combines an ear for traditional sounds, as well as a hunger for modern beat-driven music. The program will offer sounds that satisfy a yearning for pop-style grooves, but with echoes of ancient musical forms. The festival is intended to present sounds from both the Arab and Jewish worlds, the new and the old, the catchy and the eclectic.
The event will be co-sponsored by Cornell Middle Eastern BellyDance Events, who are inviting "fusion" belly dance groups, Willow and Kassar, from New York City, as well as Cornell group, Teszia, and Chandani, a local, traditional belly dance troupe. Their performances will be interlaced with the music acts throughout the evening. The organization will also be conducting Middle Eastern dance workshops from 11- 6pm at the Big Red Barn. See Middle Eastern BellyDance for more info!
The festival will demonstrate numerous musical forms. Pharaoh's Daughter, led by Basya Schecter, combines traditional Jewish melodies and tones with modern jazz, rock and urban groove, creating an uplifting and communal sentiment in the audience. Haale draws her influences from Persian Sufi music, combined with a pop/rock sensibility and provides a captivating, hypnotic performance. The Cornell Middle Eastern and Mediterranean Music Ensemble will present music accompanied by Risley Hall Artist in Resident and beatboxer, Adam Matta. The night will open up into an exploration of funk and hip hop, with Adam Matta, joined by musicians from all the bands, in the spirit of improvisation and collaboration.
Pharaohs Daughter
Haale
Adam Matta
Date: Saturday, April 12, 2008
Location: Risley Hall, Great Hall
Doors at 7 pm, show at 8 pm
The event is co-sponsored by Cornell Council for the Arts, Risley Residential College for the Creative and Performing Arts, Holland International Living Center, Cornell Hillel: The Yudowitz Center for Jewish Campus Life, Near Eastern Studies, Schwartz Center, Department of Theater, Film and Dance, Institute for European Studies, Mediterranean Initiative, Just About Music, Residential Programs, Community Centers, Residential Student Congress, Africana, GPSAFC, Hasbrouck and Cornell Middle Eastern BellyDance Events.

SXSW

At SXSW, it's sick down here. I provide vocal percussion for Dance I, II and III, Explorations, Improvisation, and Hip Hop, working with Jumay Chu, Joyce Morgenroth, Janice Kovar, Jim Self, Byron Suber, and Allen Fogelsanger, as well as with visiting guest artists from the Paul Taylor II Dance Company.
Beatboxing is an exciting form of music to dance to, an unexpected deviation from traditional instrumentation such as violin, piano, hand drum, or CD accompaniment. With differing sounds, vocalizations and “drum fills,” I do rhythms in styles of funk, hip hop, swing, waltz, 6/8, 5/4, 7/8, house music, drumnbass, rock, 2/4, tango, breakbeat, middle-eastern and most other requests. In the more open formats of Improvisation and Explorations, I can work with the dancers more, drawing on sounds from urban sounds, like traffic, trains and planes, to audio effects, like radio static, drones and filter sweeps, to natural sounds, like oceans, wind, and animals, to atmospheric sounds, such as footsteps, creaks and knocks—as well as different percussive patterns in off-beat time signatures, and also vocalizations such as blues and world-style singing, trumpet solos, upright bass walks and Tuvan-style throat singing.
I was invited to perform live accompaniment to the Dance Department’s Spring Show in 2007, scoring Jim Self’s “N2 Da Fu Cha Cha,” as well multiple year-end dance class showings.

berlin

Had an amazing time in Berlin this weekend, meeting over 80 beatboxers from around the globe, some people drove as far as I flew to get there. IT was mad inspiring to be around the energy there, and all those cats who are so dedicated to the artform. Big up to all the beatboxers I got to meet and chill with.
Beathead from Belgium put up some video of my performance there(Thank you Beathead!!!)
At the end I thank Rahzel for inspiring us, since so many cats who played that night were scratching and doing heavy bass, all techniques that came from Rahzel, but really, I should have also added, Kenny Muhammad, Doug E Fresh, Buffy, Bizmarkie, Michael Winslow, Bobby McFerrin, Wes Carroll, Kid Beyond, all the influential people who put mouth percussion and beatboxing on the map. Big up to Bee Low for organizing a great event as well. We sold out, there was a line outside the museum waiting to get in, and the performance went better than I could have hoped. Thank you to Sparlha Swa, Julianne Carney, James Ilgenfritz and Briggan Krauss who were all so awesome. Thank you to the New Museum for having us! And thank you to all who came out to support the show, it meant a great deal to have everyone there.

Now.....on to Berlin, Germany, for the Beatbox Battle International Convention...!!!
And then....continuing "Cat and Mouth" shows here at Cornell's Risley Hall....Plus...producing the "Axis of Equals" Music Festival, here at Risley, April 12th, with Haale and Pharaoh's Daughter.

Here is info about the museum show, in case you missed it:

Art on the Bowery: Adam Matta: Beatbox Drift
Adam Matta’s Beatbox Drift is a way of interacting with New York City and its more underlying, or "psychogeographic," features. The format of the “drift” allows Matta—a world-class beatboxer and innovative sample artist—to shift from style to style and sound to sound in an organic and improvised fashion as he elaborates on his habitual practice of collecting and regurgitating sounds and rhythms from the city.

Some highlights from the program included “Mareo,” an ode to the Lower East Side with beatbox and video; “Underground,” a blues-trance composition for beatbox and voice inspired by the world beneath the city’s streets; “Day in the Life,” a New York story told entirely through sound effects; a new composition for bike wheel, Walkman, laptop, theremin, and beatbox; original songs performed by Sparlha Swa, featuring Adam Matta on accompaniment; plus improvisations and compositions for violin, bass, saxophone, and beatbox, featuring Julianne Carney, Briggan Krauss, and James Ilgenfritz.

Adam Matta performed as part of the Bowery Artist Tribute, a project celebrating artists who have lived and worked on the Bowery.

updates

The concert at Bailey Hall was a success! I am providing programming for the students who live here, based around music, performance and visual art. I'm starting up a bi-weekly music series, with guest artists and open to the university community and local musicians.

2.)I'm currently beatboxing for as many as 6 or 7 dance classes a week here at Cornell. I'm the accompanist for technique, improv and hip hop classes. I'm mostly the only accompanist in the class, providing beats and soundscapes for the whole session.

3.) I am recording a new album, in fact, I already have a number of songs done, I am hoping to add at least one more new track. I am still in the process of getting feedback about the CD, but I'm pretty excited about it. I am hoping to have it done by October, and hope to schedule a CD-Release party sometime late this year, or early next year.

4.) I am performing at the Recycle Plays Festival, September 15th. I will be doing beatboxing, bike drawing performance art and bike wheel sound sculpture performance. My piece is about how the peak oil trend is like the story of Icarus, and my theme is "sacrifice your car(for a bicycle instead)."

5.) I am participating in the launch of woozyfly.com. The start up company videotaped my friends and I jamming at a sweet studio, and will be including our video in their main launch campaign. This project is expected to launch in September, and is expected to draw quite a few people. Big up to DJ Tikka Masala for this one.

6.) Joe's Pub, with Sxip Shirey, September 17th. Not to be missed!

Stay in touch!

Updates

Just got back from LA for the SNEAKER PIMPS tour; played at the Circus of Awesome put on by Heavy.com/Hot Tamales, on the same bill as Redman, Swizz Beats and Expensive Taste. Was really great to get out to LA.
Played Lincoln Center's Allen Room, with Bora Yoon. Stefano Zazzera, Kaki King and Luke Dubois were also on the bill. The show was incredible, with a naturally-occuring light show in the back drop, as the back wall of the theater looked out over Columbus Circle and the show was timed to coincide with the sunset.
Recording new EP. Will let you know more details as they become available.
Going up to Ithaca tomorrow! Begin residency tomorrow for the fall semester.
Starting up some band projects, one with Pete Gerakaris on guitar, and Jon Price on bass(video to come). Also working with bass superstar Tim Lefebvre, thanks to John McC at Living Jazz Archive. IT was for the halftime entertainment at a basketball charity put on by istarfinancial. The six of us, Masai Electro, Kid Lucky, D Cross, Yako, Yo Yo Beats, and myself, performed seven cover tunes, including White Stripes' Seven Nation Army, Missy Eliot's Work It, and Gnarls Barkley's Crazy. Then Semerock and Shockwave joined in and we freestyled till the end, all with Hypno, Pax Prime, and one other B-boy doing they thing on the court with us. We had a dope time, played in front of about 1500 people, although it looked like a small crowd, given the huge venue! and I got to meet and talk with Doug E Fresh.
This past weekend, I played with Toni Blackman at Brooklyn Museum, for First Saturdays. We performed some of Toni's tunes, and she spoke with the audience about her music, her travels(Ivory Coast, Senegal, South Asia, more), and her experiences as a woman in hip hop. She is a powerful speaker and role model, hope to work with her more in the future. Also connected with her guitarist, Tomas, about a project I had recently spoken over the phone with him about, but never met him face to face. Small world..
Last Friday, I played at LEMURplex's Tranzducer party. It was a small crowd, but it was great performing in a room full of musical robots hanging from the ceiling. I played my bicycle wheel, and a new system I have set up with a Chaos Pad and an Ipod. I'm stoked. I have video. Will post soon.
Working on a new album. Almost done...

Love on Ludlow

Last night, there were two events right next door to each other on Ludlow Street. At Piano's, Andy Action was having his wedding celebration, with 16 bands in one night, playing 10 minutes each. At Living Room, The Animators, the band I used to provide percussion for in '03-04, was having their final swan song performance as a band. It was a powerful night, with stunning performances going on simultaneously in both venues. I played at Andy's at 7, got to jam with the awesome Zef Noi$e, and Andy, then bounced over to do the gig with the Animators. Then bounced back. It was a sentimental, hopeful, mushy mushy kinda night on Ludlow St.

Friday, played Rubluad with Sxip(www.myspace.com/sxipshirey) and had a ball. Saturday morning was Root and Branch, which went really well. The kids did an awesome job, and it wasa beautiful day down on the pier on Red Hook. Saturday, I rocked out with the Creamsicles, at the River Cafe in Harlem, got hooked up with great food, the music was dope.

Will play with the Creamsicles again this Saturday in Riverside park. Sxip and I are trying to book some tours for later this year. Will be in touch.

Atomic Duos

The show on Tuesday was dope. Samita, Bora and DJ AK 88 kilt it, we had a great time. Thanks to Here Arts Center, again. Just finished a shoot for Stride Gum. June 21st, you'll see the launch of the online campaign, where you can pick me out of a line up of musicians doing our thing. More on that as it becomes available. This weekend, will be performing as part of the Hip Hop Cultural Center's Rap-a-thon benefit event. We're trying to create the world's longest continuous freestyle. I'll be holding down the beat for a portion of it. It was the screening of the documentary, Planet B-Boy(www.planetbboy.com) at the Tribeca Film Festival. 6,000 people came out to see the movie and live shows. I rocked with the beatboxers(I tracked them down when Benson Lee, the director, asked me to get some guys together--I have a song in the film, written by Flavio Lichtenthal). I also rocked with MC/poet/singer Toni Blackman. The day was incredible, a groundbreaking, record-setting convergence of talent and positivity. Congrats to Benson Lee and everyone who made this film. It's a major milestone in hiphop and urban culture. The bboy demonstrations, and the ones you see in the film are unbelievable. My friend Ana says the film is definitely worth buying, and she never says that about any film!

Before that, I played with Sxip at Joe's Pub, great show, man the sound is SO GOOD there. Masai came through and joined us on the last tune, and the rafters started caving in.

Before that, I played at Rebar in DUMBO, Brooklyn. Beautiful space, beautiful time, great beers! Hope to play there again soon.

Been working on Roots and Branches, by Jesse Phillips-Fein, a dance piece working with Arab and Jewish youth. We've been meeting with an awesome Debke troupe from Bay Ridge, incorporating some modern-style gestures into their traditional style movements, and I've been providng all the beats for the runthroughs etc. We'll be performing June 2nd at the Red Hook Waterfront Arts Festival. It should be a beautiful, fun piece. I also collaborated with Jesse at her class she teaches at Brooklyn Friends' School, we worked on vocal sounds and the kids came up with some awesome beatbox/vocal effects/throst singing combinations. It was really fun jamming with them all.

Panama City

Tonight, I'm playing at this fine event:

LOVE
tuesday, 20 march, 2007
7pm until
QT Hotel
125 west 45th street
(swimwear encouraged)

In other news, I just got back from Panama City, FL. Heavy.com flew me down there--they found me on the web--and I performed with nine other talents--a contortionist, a b-boy, a yoyo pro, etc. The crowd decided who was the hottest and who was the coolest, they decided I was the coolest, and I won a snowboard! The event was sponsored by Hot Tamales Ice. There is video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLwVMpq1euo. The event was on the beach, at a Spring Break party beach house, with a wakeboard demonstration in the afternoon. It was a lot of fun. I had a great time meeting, performing and chilling with everyone.
Before that, I was at Cornell, doing the live score to a dance performance. The piece involved ten different-style groups coming out and dancing, and I beatboxed for each one and tied everything together. Tonight is the third night of “N2 Da Fu Cha Cha,” the dance piece which I’m scoring with live beatbox, at Cornell University; it’s been going really well. Next week, I’ve been invited to perform for Heavy.com, at their unveiling of a new online video channel, “Circus of Awesome.” That’s in Panama City, FLA, which I’m looking forward to, after the Ithaca snow squalls and wind. Then I end up in DC for the East Coast Acappella Summit, performing and giving workshops with Yo Yo Beats(great beatboxer). This is Mar. 23-25.

In other news, Splicemusic.com is an online music editing, sampling and sharing site; they recently had a competition to mix music solely created from the voice, and I ended up winning the comp! You can check out my profile at http://www.splicemusic.com/user/amatta/

Also, I now have music for sale on my myspace page! so check it out, and download some stuff…
http://www.myspace.com/adammatta

There also a clip of me on youtube, if you havent’ seen it yet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7Zqh4NR3UM

Keep in touch, hope to cross paths soon.

Best,
Adam

Press

"Matta is the soul of ['Beatbox Bard'], and because his mic covers his face throughout, we only see his impassive almond eyes and his quiet, rhythmic physical presence — until the curtain call, when the mic drops and the person behind the performer breaks through. Then a show on Sunday. Then a chill cast party at Bruce's house, then a mellow, really fun hang at Bora's friend's family's house for a nice way to wind down a great month in Ithaca. We've been written up in all the local papers, ( i.e., http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070125/ENTERTAINMENT03/701250319/1082, http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17738072&BRD=1395&PAG=461&dept_id=216611&rfi=6). We got a review in the Ithaca Journal(http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070208/ENTERTAINMENT03/702080306/1082), thanks to all the local papers and journalists who have been interested in our show, and in beatboxing in general.
Have been having a great time chilling with Cornell students and faculty. Went to Ithaca College to perform for a Recording Techniques seminar, visited two local elementary schools and performed for over a couple hundred kids, got to sing/beatbox a medley of songs with Fall Creek Elementary, beatboxed for Jim Self's and Jumay (??)'s dance classes here at Cornell, improvising beats for an Explorations and an Advanced Modern class. Last night, Cornell beatboxer and Chem Major, Bennett Fox, had a party at his house, and bluegrass band, the Howling Brothers, showed up, and we jammed together, tearing the low basement roof off the sucka. All in all, Cornell's been a great haul. Two more shows tonight and tomorrow, then it's back to NYC for a gig with Sxip Shirey at Tonic, Feb. 13th. Then it's down south for a series of gigs. In addition to MMC 11, and Exploris Museum, I've been asked to appear on a panel about entreprenurialship at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. Looking forward to that, and to reconnecting with vocal artist, Lynn Book, an old teacher of mine. Then, I'm actually coming back to Ithaca, I've been asked to beatbox for Open Portal, a major dance presentation featuring a wide variety of styles, here at Cornell. So, I'm coming back to good ol Ithaca. More soon, stay in touch.
Peace.

Video from Makeshift

This is a video that was part of my multimedia show at Here Arts Center. That is, I'll be on stage in Ithaca, with Beatbox Bard, and then in Minnesota, my voice and beats will be heard in the simultaneous production of Marsupial Girl, a fantastic children's musical, written by Lisa D'Amour, and scored by Sxip Shirey.

mural

Here is an image of the mural I created for the Staten Island Children's Museum Ladder 11 Exhibit.

some recent events

hey, i think the scroll thing is working...anyway, wanted to say i had a great time playing with Akim Funk Buddha at BAM Cafe a couple weeks ago, we tore the roof off while Jay-Z was rockin in the next room. Also had a great time playing with Fabulous Entourage at the Annex. We, again, tore the place down, also Sxip and I played, and played a follow-up set at Earl Dax's event at The Delancey later that night. Sxip just hired me to do the beats for his soundtrack to "Marsupial Girl," a terrifc children's production in Minnesota next year. Still getting great feedback on my murals at the Staten Island Children's Museum, where I work. Pics to come....went up to Cornell to keep workshopping BEATBOX BARD, it's really taking shape, and has been a blast to work on so far. Shot a video in an undisclosed Manhattan landmark building for my piece, MAKESHIFT. The footage came out really nice, it features Sarah Locke of Alchemy Dance, moving, while I lay down beats, and was shot by filmmaker, and fellow Stuy grad, Althea Wasow, and video artist, Kleoni Moussakis. You should defintiely check out both of their work. Althea just screened a recent short in Puerto Rico. Tore yet another roof off at Joes Pub on Dec. 3rd with Sxip, at his solo CD release party. Got to play with him, as well as Michael Farkas, uber multi talented at harmonica, as well as various ragtime household objects. Finally, got to play with Nicholas Naylor-Leyland, with slammin guitarist Eric (???) and virtuosic Michael Leonhart, we did a gig at Rockwood and rocked the joint. Keep in touch, y'all, lots of fun to be had with the infinite potential of vocal percussion...

updates and events

Something's funky with the site and the events scroll isn't working so here are upcoming events:

Thursday, Dec. 7th, 8PM
Tom Billings
What is the Word
OPENING Reception: Thursday, december 7th, from 7-10 pm
December 7th – January 21st 2006
GITANA ROSA GALLERY
19 HOPE STREET
Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Gitana Rosa Gallery invites you to the opening reception of what is the word, A solo exhibition of mixed media paintings and installation by tom billings. The mural is also a memorial to six firefighters who lost their lives in 9/11. A one-time employee of the museum was a wife of one of the firefighters, and was able to contact the families of the firefighters, who gave me a list of personal items to include in each fireman's locker.
